2006-08-04<BR>　　Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, 1998<BR>　　Photograph by Sisse Brimberg<BR>　　During the first weekend of August, the residents of Vestmannaeyjar celebrate Iceland's first constitution in bold Viking style—with fire, song, and plenty of drink. Democracy took root on this rocky island in 930 A.D., when the Althing, predecessor to today's parliament, first met. 2006-08-06<BR>　　Hiroshima, Japan, 1994<BR>　　Photograph by Jodi Cobb<BR>　　A couple walks through a Hiroshima cemetery for victims of the world's first atom bomb attack. Detonated by the United States on August 6, 1945, the A-bomb fulfilled its promise of hastening the end of World War II when Japan surrendered nine days later. The swamp covers an area in southeast Georgia that is about half the size of Rhode Island. At one time, gray wolves were among the most widely distributed mammals on Earth.
