Product Organization
The ArcGIS system is built and extended using software components called ArcObjects? ArcObjects are an integrated collection of cross-platform GIS software components that are client and server ready. At 9.0, ArcGIS has a common developer experience across three products: ArcGIS Engine ArcGIS Desktop ArcGIS Server Modular Architecture At 9.0 the system architecture is organized into sets of libraries specific to the products: ArcGIS Engine Libraries ArcGIS Desktop Libraries ArcGIS Server Libraries APIs At 9.0, developers have the option of working on the following newly supported APIs: Java Native C++ Enhanced .NET Support Developer Components ArcGIS Controls ArcGIS Engine includes high-level developer controls that can be used to build or extend applications with ArcGIS functionality and a quality map user interface. At 9.0, the following controls are available: TOCControl ToolbarControl ReaderControl ArcReaderControl GlobeControl SceneControl PageLayoutControl MapControl Map Document 150 Commands and Tools Documentation and Revised Help System At 9.0 the user documentation has been reorganized and expanded. New features include: Product-specific Developer Guides Extending ArcObjects Library Overviews The organization and functional groupings of objects within each component library are described in detail. For an example, see the Display Library Overview. Examples and Samples in multiple languages (VB, VB.NET, C#, C++, Java) Add-ins and Developer Tools Add-ins for the Visual Basic 6 IDE and the Visual Studio .NET IDE and general use Developer Tools automate some of the tasks performed by the software engineer when developing with ArcObjects, as well as provide tools that make debugging and writing code easier. Add-Ins Developer Tools Scalability Strategy Thread Safe Objects New programming patterns for scalability Developer Web Site ArcGIS Developer Online is the new developer web site for 9.0.
